Welcome to the Science, Technology & Engineering Department!!

A minimum of four Science, Technology & Engineering courses are required for graduation. All grade nine students are required to take and successfully complete Biology. The course selections for students in grades 10-12 may vary and should be discussed with a guidance counselor. The following learning strands are listed from the Science, Technology & Engineering Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for grades 9-12. Learning strands are intended to promote a learning experience that stresses knowledge and inquiry in which students can actively pursue questions to extend their understanding of Science, Technology & Engineering content knowledge.

Common Core Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects All Science, Technology & Engineering offerings are considered laboratory courses. Students will be assessed on laboratory technique and safety as well as on written laboratory reports. In addition, all Science, Technology & Engineering courses also incorporate the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading and Writing 9-12. The inclusion of these standards recognizes the critical importance of reading and writing in the content areas. When reading scientific and technical texts, students need to be able to gain knowledge from challenging texts that often make extensive use of diagrams and data to convey information and illustrate concepts. Similarly, students must become adept at gathering information, evaluating sources, citing material accurately, and reporting findings from the research and analysis of sources in a clear and cogent manner. Students must be able to read and produce these complex informational texts with independence and confidence to meet the standards for college and career readiness.
